City of McAllen Celebrates Grand Opening of Camp McAllen

The new campground opens July 22, 2025

McALLEN, TEXAS – The City of McAllen held a ribbon cutting ceremony for Camp McAllen on July 16, 2025, a first-of-its-kind public campground designed to offer residents and visitors immersive outdoor experiences, right in the heart of the city.

Located at 8701 N. 23rd Street, just north of Frontera Road, the 20-acre site includes fishing docks, kayak launches, an archery range, walking and biking trails, and group camping spaces.

Mayor Javier Villalobos, City Commissioners, and city staff gathered with community members for a grand opening marking the completion of the $1,861,709.03 project.

“This is more than just a new park—it’s a space where families can connect, where kids can learn about nature, and where people can take a break from their screens and enjoy the outdoors,” said Mayor Javier Villalobos. “Camp McAllen reflects our commitment to providing meaningful, high-quality recreational spaces for the people of McAllen.”

Designed by Heffner Design Group and built by EB Merit Construction, the campground features a trail system, screened shelters, fire pits, group gathering areas, and solar-powered lighting. It was developed under the direction of the McAllen Parks & Recreation Department, with support from the Engineering Department and other city divisions.

“This is a big win for District 1 and the entire city,” said City Commissioner Antonio “Tony” Aguirre, who represents the area where the campground is located. “Camp McAllen gives our residents a beautiful, safe space to enjoy nature and create memories without having to leave the city limits. I’m proud to see this project come to life.”

City Manager Isaac “Ike” Tawil praised the collaboration behind the project. “Camp McAllen is the result of a true team effort—from our Mayor and City Commission to the Parks, Engineering, and support departments,” he said. “Everyone involved shared the same goal: to create a unique outdoor experience that’s accessible to all. That vision is now a reality.”

Visitors to Camp McAllen can enjoy amenities including:

  • Fishing docks and kayak/canoe launch areas
  • An archery range for classes and competitions
  • Tent campgrounds with screened shelters and fire pits
  • A group welcome gazebo
  • Walking, running, and mountain biking trails
  • Solar-powered lighting and family restrooms

“The opening of Camp McAllen marks an exciting milestone in our ongoing efforts to expand recreational opportunities for both residents and visitors,” said Denny Meline, McAllen Parks and Recreation Director. “This new campground is more than just a destination. It’s a place for exploration, education, and connection with the natural world.”

Camp McAllen is open year-round and is designed for use by families, youth groups, schools, scouts, and outdoor enthusiasts of all ages.
