Washington, DC — The U.S. Senate today began voting on the massive and destructive tax and immigration legislative package – with the House of Representatives likely to take up the bill mid-week. As the Wall Street Journal details, the Senate version of the bill, “allocates more than $150 billion for immigration enforcement, including a $29.85 billion appropriation for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and $46.5 billion for Customs and Border Protection to build a border wall. It also adds $45 billion for the detention of migrants and $13.5 billion in grants to pay state and local governments for immigration enforcement efforts.”
The following is a statement from America’s Voice Executive Director Vanessa Cárdenas, previewing the week ahead on Capitol Hill and the larger implications.
“The budget bill that the GOP is advancing betrays what we stand for as a country. If the bill passes intact there will be more ICE militarized raids terrorizing our communities; more students and U.S. citizens abducted by masked men; more children separated from their families; and utter disregard for due process and the rule of law for every American. Stephen Miller will receive an unprecedented infusion of tens of billions of dollars to fully scale up his personal mass deportation crusade at an incalculable cost to American families, communities, and our homegrown industries. The damage to our country will be irreparable.
Democrats and patriotic Republicans must stand strong and reject the colossal harms of this bill, including by voting against any efforts to keep or add language to harm immigrants. These Members – especially those House Republicans who have spoken out against the enforcement overreach and harm – should be prepared to let their votes do the talking on a defining vote for their home districts.”
