Chairman Ramón Romero, Jr. Responds to Passage of Senate Bill 2: “One Call Did It All–And Public Schools Paid the Price”

State Representative Ramón Romero, Jr., Chairman of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus (MALC), issued the following statement in response to the Texas House of Representatives’ passage of Senate Bill 2, the school voucher bill:

“Last session, we had a bipartisan coalition of brave men and women who stood tall against this voucher scam. They stood strong against the threats and represented Texas values and their districts well. We defeated vouchers!

Sadly, the deep pockets of billionaires from outside Texas made good on their threats and defeated many of those courageous Texans for that singular vote. Today, we have a very different House. With one call from the White House, the courage that once existed left the building.

Texas kids in public schools lost. We’re now one step closer to the privatization of schools. Texans deserve a legislature with the courage to stand up to lies—and not let Washington, D.C. push us around in our own Texas House.”
