McAllen Public Library Celebrates 10 Years of Día with Books, Luchadores, and Family Fun

McAllen Public Library invites the community to an unforgettable evening at the 10th annual El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day), taking place on Sunday, April 27, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Main Library, located at 4001 N. Main St. in McAllen. This year’s celebration, free for the entire family, is themed “Champions Read,” honors young readers and brings a fresh twist to the event by merging literacy with the thrill of lucha libre.
In a first for the Library, the event will feature live professional wrestling matches by The Texas Wrestling League. Guests can cheer on masked luchadores as they step into the ring for high-energy bouts that are sure to entertain attendees of all ages.
Before the matches, local children’s authors Grandma Cookie and Rogelio Cervantes will take the stage to share their latest books, followed by activities for kids and teens. There will also be a Teen Game Room, along with free popcorn and book giveaways for youth, while supplies last.
“Día is a meaningful tradition that highlights the importance of celebrating children and encouraging a love of reading,” said Kate Horan, Library Director. “This milestone year gives us the chance to introduce something new while continuing our mission to make reading fun and accessible for every family in our community.”
Día at McAllen Public Library is a community-wide celebration of culture, literature, and family. Now in its 10th year, the event continues to provide families with opportunities to connect through books, stories, and shared traditions. All ages—from toddlers to abuelitos—are welcome to attend.
