Brownsville Leads Region In Sales Tax Revenue Growth, Report Shows

A new report from the Texas Comptroller’s Office highlights Brownsville’s impressive economic growth. The city generated more than $53 million in sales tax revenue during the first 11 months of 2024.
The report underscores strong consumer spending and economic activity, signaling a thriving local economy and a positive outlook for businesses and job growth in Brownsville.
Among cities in Cameron and Willacy counties, Brownsville ranked first in tax revenue collection, reinforcing its position as a regional economic leader. The City of Harlingen followed with nearly $31 million in sales tax revenue.
City officials attribute the growth to a combination of business expansion, increased tourism, and a diversified economy, which includes key industries such as retail, hospitality, manufacturing, and international trade.
The strong sales tax revenue performance further supports Brownsville’s ongoing investments in public infrastructure, economic development, and community services, ensuring continued prosperity for residents and businesses alike.
