High school students from across the region are gearing up for a competition that could earn them a spot in the National Science Bowl (NSB) in Washington, D.C., this April. They will first battle it out at the Regional Science Bowl this Saturday, Feb. 8, at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
UTRGV will host the Regional Science Bowl, where more than a dozen high school teams will showcase their science knowledge and skills. The event will take place in the Mathematics and General Classroom (MAGC) Building on the Edinburg campus, starting at 9 a.m. and concluding with a championship round and awards ceremony later that day.
The Regional Science Bowl serves as a qualifier for the NSB, a high school and middle school science knowledge competition that uses a quiz bowl format. Contestants will compete in quiz-style matchups, answering prompts using a buzzer system like those seen on popular television game shows. Students will be tested on various subjects, including earth science, biology, physics, and mathematics, making it a fun and engaging way to exercise their knowledge.
The competition has been organized and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy since its inception in 1991.
“This is a great opportunity for UTRGV to strengthen its connection with the local community by welcoming students to campus and helping them feel valued as future university students,” said Omar Elizondo, Regional Science Bowl director and associate professor of Practice, UTRGV School of Integrative Biological and Chemical Sciences.
The winner will secure a spot at the National Science Bowl, which will be held in Washington, D.C., in April.
