Men’s Tennis Begins Spring Season Jan. 11
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Wednesday the 2025 spring schedule for the Vaqueros men’s tennis team.
The spring schedule includes 25 matches and will pit the Vaqueros against five opponents that finished the 2024 season ranked in the top 75 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). UTRGV’s first nine matches are on the road, including a season-opening doubleheader at Oklahoma State on Jan. 11 and a trip to Austin to face the 2024 national runner-up Texas on Jan. 15.
The Vaqueros will play at Rice, UTSA and Abilene Christian before heading to Lubbock for a trio of matches. UTRGV faces Texas Tech on Jan. 31 and will open February with neutral site matches against New Mexico State and Lubbock Christian.
UTRGV’s first home match at the Orville Cox Tennis Center is slated for Feb. 9 against Prairie View A&M (PVAMU). The Vaqueros remain at home for a Feb. 13 match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the first of two contests in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union. Though both teams now compete in the Southland Conference (SLC), the February match will be considered a non-conference contest.
The Vaqueros will close out February at SMU before a doubleheader in Waco on March 1 featuring matches against Baylor and Illinois. UTRGV is scheduled for a California road trip March 7-10 with matches against St. Mary’s College, UC Davis, Sacramento State and UC Riverside before returning to the Orville Cox Tennis Center for a match against UT Permian Basin on March 13. The final non-conference match is slated for March 16 at PVAMU.
UTRGV will close the regular season with five SLC matches. The Vaqueros will start on the road, playing at New Orleans and Nicholls March 22-24. They’ll host Lamar and Incarnate Word on April 5 and 7, respectively. The regular season finale will be April 12 at Corpus Christi in a South Texas Showdown match.
The Southland Conference Tennis Championships will run April 22-26 hosted at Nicholls’ facilities in Thibodaux, La. The NCAA Team Championships are May 15-18 in Waco.
“I am very excited about our schedule. Our guys are committed to the process of continuing to build this program and this schedule will prepare us for that,” men’s tennis head coach Nathan Robinson said. “We will be tested against some of the best programs, players and coaches in Texas and across the country. This will definitely have us primed and prepared to take on the Southland Conference. We will also have a great opportunity to show our brand across the country and get our student-athletes the opportunity to travel and experience other parts of the United States. Our guys are excited about the challenges that await. We have high expectations for this year and we’re excited to see what we accomplish. We invite the fans to join us at any of our matches.”
