BMetro Bus Stops Upgraded For Pedestrian Safety

BMetro Bus Stops Upgraded For Pedestrian Safety

The City of Brownsville is taking steps to improve safety at bus stops for Brownsville Metro (BMetro) passengers by upgrading curbside areas. The new project will replace outdated “curb cuts” along city streets with 5-foot-wide sidewalks, creating safer, more accessible zones for pedestrians.

The city aims to enhance accessibility and safety at six key locations, focusing on pedestrian convenience, especially for those using wheelchairs. Currently, curb cuts at these sites are unused, and buses have been relocated to better-positioned stops. The new sidewalks will prevent pedestrians from navigating flooded areas or coming close to vehicle traffic.

Funding for the $176,000 project is provided by the Community Development Block Grant. The city commission will review the construction contract this month, and if approved, work could begin early next year. The project is expected to take approximately six to eight weeks to complete.
