EDINBURG, Texas — The Museum of South Texas History presents “The Shooting Star of Starr County: An Out of this World Discovery” exhibit, opening Friday, Sept. 20, in the Cell Block Gallery upstairs in the 1910 Jail building.

On Feb. 15, 2023, meteorites landed on a ranch near the town of El Sauz in Starr County, Texas. The meteorites found on the ranch were documented and collected by expert and amateur meteorite hunters. The exhibit will highlight a two-fold story: how meteors fell through the sky across Europe and the United States before crash landing on a ranch in South Texas and the history of space rocks. Several meteorite pieces found on the ranch property will be featured in state-of-the-art cases with a 360-view.

“The Shooting Star of Starr County: An Out of this World Discovery” exhibit is made possible in part by a grant from The Betty S. Kelso Foundation.

This exhibit, which will run from September 2024 to August 2025, is included in the regular museum admission fees. Museum hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

About Museum of South Texas History

The Museum of South Texas History is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. It is located downtown Edinburg at 200 North Closner Boulevard on the Hidalgo County Courthouse square. Founded in 1967 as the Hidalgo County Historical Museum in the 1910 Hidalgo County Jail, the museum has grown over the decades through a series of expansions to occupy a full city block. In 2003, following the completion of a 22,500 square foot expansion, the museum was renamed the Museum of South Texas History to better reflect its regional scope. Today, the museum preserves and presents the borderland heritage of South Texas and northeastern Mexico through its permanent collection and the Margaret H. McAllen Memorial Archives and exhibits spanning prehistory through the 20th century.
