Brownsville Approves $2.4 Million For Transformative Projects

The Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation (BCIC) has greenlit eight major projects to enhance the quality of life and drive economic growth within the city. These initiatives, which together represent an investment of over $2.4 million, underscore BCIC’s commitment to creating a more vibrant and prosperous community.

“Any non-profit or profit business is eligible to apply for our quality-of-life grants. We are looking to support projects that beautify our community, support recreation, tourism, and community wellness,” said Cori Pena, President and CEO of BCIC. Pena pointed to the success of projects like the Zip Line at Gladys Porter Zoo as examples of how these grants have bolstered both local attractions and tourism.

Among the recently approved Quality of Life projects are programs that range from adapted sports for children with special needs to community wellness initiatives and cultural enrichment. The recipients include the Adapted Sports League for Children with Special Needs, the Brownsville Wellness Coalition, the Children’s Museum of Brownsville, Local Radio Station KXIQ 105.1, Moody Clinic, Camp Rio, and the Brownsville Historical Association.

The grant awarded to Moody Clinic will support its expansion efforts, allowing the clinic to serve the community better.

The BCIC, an economic development organization, focuses on bringing together people, businesses, and resources to elevate the quality of life in Brownsville. Staff carefully reviewed the latest applications to ensure they met the eligibility requirements before presenting them to the Board of Directors for final approval. The selected projects were chosen based on their potential to enhance community assets such as outdoor recreation, museums, and other cultural institutions.

“We look at where there’s eligibility to enhance our assets in our community—whether it’s outdoor recreation, museums, our zoo, things that not only our community but tourists actually enjoy,” Pena added.

The next Quality of Life Grants round is expected to open in October or November, with applications closing in late January 2025. Interested applicants can find more information by visiting brownsvilleedc.org.
