Spotlighting Our Collections!
We are excited to spotlight a fascinating item in our collections: a piece of stationery used to compose letters on behalf of the John H. Shary Estate. This stationery references the Shary Building, which now proudly houses the Mission Historical Museum.
John H. Shary was a visionary who played a pivotal role in the establishment of the citrus industry in the Rio Grande Valley. His significant contributions have left a lasting legacy in the region. In the early 20th century, Shary purchased 36,000 acres of land in Mission and the surrounding areas, which became known as “Sharyland.” This vast expanse of land was transformed into thriving citrus groves, laying the foundation for an industry that would become central to the local economy.
In addition to his agricultural achievements, Shary was deeply invested in the community’s development. In 1921, recognizing the need for quality education for the children of the area, he founded the Sharyland Independent School District. Shary served as the president of the first board of trustees, helping to shape the educational landscape of the region.
The piece of stationery we are highlighting not only represents Shary’s business endeavors but also serves as a tangible connection to the rich history of Mission and the Shary Estate. It is a reminder of the correspondence and administrative efforts that were integral to managing and developing Sharyland.
Today, the Shary Building, once the hub of these activities, continues to be a cornerstone of local heritage as the home of the Mission Historical Museum. The museum preserves and shares the stories of the region, including the remarkable contributions of John H. Shary.
By spotlighting this stationery, we celebrate the legacy of John H. Shary and his enduring impact on our community. His efforts in both the citrus industry and education have left an indelible mark, shaping the history and growth of the Rio Grande Valley.
