Tropical Cyclone Development Is Possible Early Next Week
Residents of the Rio Grande Valley are urged to stay vigilant over the next few days as the National Hurricane Center is forecasting a potential tropical cyclone development in the Bay of Campeche early next week, the National Weather Service in Brownsville/Rio Grande Valley reports. Forecasters say there’s a 40% chance of this system developing into a tropical cyclone within the next seven days.
While the system’s core is expected to remain south of the Rio Grande Valley and its adjacent coastal waters, the region will still experience significant weather impacts.
According to the NWS, residents of the Valley and the Northern Ranchlands should prepare for increased rain chances starting as early as Sunday, with precipitation expected to intensify through Wednesday. Forecasts suggest the possibility of receiving between 1 to 3 inches of rain in areas generally east of I-69E, with lesser amounts anticipated elsewhere.
In addition to the rainfall, large incoming swells are predicted to affect the lower Texas coastal waters starting Sunday and continuing through Tuesday and Wednesday. These swells will heighten the risk of deadly rip currents from Sunday through Wednesday, and there is a potential for minor coastal flooding during high tide periods.
Authorities are urging residents and visitors to exercise caution, particularly in coastal areas, and to stay updated with the latest weather advisories.
