14-Year-Old Girl Found Dead After Rescue Attempt
HARLINGEN, Texas — A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday morning at South Padre Island when the Cameron County Park Ranger Division received a distress call at approximately 7:15 a.m. regarding two swimmers in trouble, 0.25 miles north of county beach access 5.
Upon arrival, Park Rangers learned that while the younger swimmer had been rescued, a 14-year-old girl from Harlingen, TX, was still missing. She was last seen wearing gray shorts and a black top.
The Park Rangers promptly alerted the US Coast Guard and surrounding agencies for assistance in the search. Despite extensive efforts, the girl remained missing.
Later that night, at around 11:10 p.m., Park Rangers were informed that a body had washed ashore 2 miles north of county beach access 5. The body was recovered and confirmed by the girl’s aunt and uncle to be the missing 14-year-old swimmer.
The Cameron County Park Rangers and local authorities are investigating the incident.
